Lombardy

Regional Government of Lombardy

Regione Lombardia has been managing regional Parks since early the early 80s. Indeed in 1983, through regional law 86/83, it instituted Suburban Parks, as areas with a strategic importance in the ecologic equilibrium around a city, in landscape and environmental protection and recovery of city belts so as to connect urban green systems with the countryside. Thanks to this law there are now 4 Suburban Parks among the 24 regional parks: Parco Agricolo Sud Milano, Parco Nord Milano, Parco delle Groane and Parco Spina Verde . The first 2 are involved in the project.

Parco Nord Milano was set up in 1975 and works on planning and re-naturalisation and leisure and environmental education issues in the northern outskirts of Milan. The park is 650 hectares wide and is located in a densely urbanised area, characterised by the presence of historical buildings (now almost completely disappeared as a result of de-industrialisation) and large areas of construction. It counts up to 2.5 million visitors per year. In 1994 an agreement was signed with Regione Lombardia to set up and manage the Environmental Education Regional Archives, thus it has become regional leader on this issue.

Parco Agricolo Sud Milano was set up in 1990 and it covers more than 64.000 hectares. The territory is composed of agricultural lands such as cornfields, meadows, poplar cultivations, woods and wetlands. A network of mill runs and water channels irrigates the area.
This regional Park covers a vast semicircle-shaped area around the city of Milan, from east to west. Due to its functions it combines agricultural issues with an increasingly vast demand for open spaces devoted to the fruition of both significant cultural and environmental values. Since 1999 it has provided annual data on waterfowl populations, which is useful to plan habitat management works with the aim to protect and restore wetlands and marshes.

Expectations in the project

According to the regional law Regione Lombardia is now developing the Protected Areas Regional Plan, a regional managing master plan, which identifies indicators for sustainability in protected areas. It wishes to use the PERIURBAN results to improve this document, as far as suburban parks are concerned. The two Parks involved will work both in a regional and interregional level to share good practices and to address real challenges.

They will focus on improving communication and dissemination of results: workshops on environmental education and on biodiversity issues will be organised in different context (Universities, meetings for visitors / technicians) and a video on suburban parks will be made.
